A long, narrow face and oversized ears set this head-and-shoulders caricature of Woodrow Wilson apart from more conventional portraits of the president. Printed in color halftone in 1915, it dates from a year when Wilson was guiding the country through the early stages of the European war, with neutrality and military preparedness at the center of national debate. Caricaturists of the 1910s often used distortions like these to make a politician's character recognizable at a glance. The print is credited to an artist named Weal, and the illustrated press of the period would be the place to look for its original setting.
