Flavel, Oregon, in 1915 was a small riverfront landing on the Columbia's south shore, facing Astoria across the water near the river's mouth. Its fortunes rested on the river, where salmon canneries, sawmills, and lumber shipping drew steamers and sailing vessels to the docks. The S.S. Great Northern would have been one of the steamers working this stretch of the lower Columbia, carrying freight and passengers between river towns and ocean ports. Ships bound in and out had to cross the dangerous Columbia bar, guided by pilots, so the river mouth was a busy and sometimes hazardous workplace. Residents would have known Flavel mainly as a landing tied to Astoria's commerce.
