Marshfield, Oregon, in 1915 was a lumber town on the shore of Coos Bay, where sawmills turned the surrounding Douglas fir and spruce into boards and timbers for shipment. The C. A. Smith Lumber Manufacturing Company's plant was one of the mills that lined the waterfront, and the bay's deep channel let schooners and steamers carry its output to California and other markets. Logs arrived by rail and by water, so the mill's yards, booms, and loading docks shaped daily life in a town whose fortunes rose and fell with the timber trade. Residents of the period knew Marshfield as a busy bay port and a center of the Coos County lumber economy, a reputation it kept until the town took the name Coos Bay in 1944.
