Marshfield, on Oregon's Coos Bay, was a lumber and shipping town in 1915, and the C. A. Smith Lumber Manufacturing Company was one of the mills that gave it work. Sawmills along the bay cut Douglas fir into lumber that left by schooner and steamer for markets up and down the Pacific coast, tying the waterfront closely to the surrounding forests. Logs arrived by rafts and rail, and the docks and mill yards kept many local men employed through the year. Residents knew the community as Marshfield until 1944, when it took the name Coos Bay, so in 1915 the town's identity rested on its mills, its harbor, and the steady rhythm of work along the water.
