Marshfield, Oregon, on the south side of Coos Bay, was a lumber and shipping town in 1915, and the C.A. Smith Lumber Manufacturing Company's mill was one of the working sawmills along its waterfront. Coos Bay's deep harbor let schooners load finished lumber for coastal ports, especially in California, so the mills and the bay were the center of local work and wages. Most residents depended on the timber trade, either in the woods, at the saws, or on the docks. Marshfield was then a separate city from the neighboring communities on the bay, and it would not take the name Coos Bay until 1944. For people living there, the town was known first as a place where logs came in and lumber went out.
