In 1915, Tillamook County was a green, rain-soaked stretch of Oregon's north coast, and its economy rested on dairying, logging, and fishing. Dairy farms along the Tillamook Bay valleys sent milk to creameries, and the county's cheese was already gaining a reputation beyond the coast. The county fair, held in the town of Tillamook, gathered farm families from the surrounding valleys for livestock, produce, and exhibits that showed what the land could yield. Lumber from the forested hills kept mills and camps busy, and the fair was one of the few occasions when farmers, loggers, and townspeople met in one place.
