Ann Arbor's 1880 panoramic map presents a college town built up around the University of Michigan, with campus buildings rising above the houses, streets, and church spires. Albert Ruger drew the view from an imagined position high above the town, and Beck & Pauli printed it as a lithograph, the method that let publishers sell detailed pictures of small cities to residents and local businesses. J.J. Stoner is also credited on the record. Panoramic maps like this were popular in the late nineteenth century, and today they show how a Michigan town of that era was laid out, with its river, rail lines, and streets captured in one sweeping view.
