Drawn in 1880, this bird's-eye view shows San Diego from an elevated angle, letting its maker set the streets, waterfront, and surrounding hills on a single sheet. E. S. Moore was among the artists who produced such panoramic views of American towns in the late nineteenth century, when they were often used to promote growing communities. San Diego was then a modest port on its bay, and the railroad link that would transform its growth had not yet arrived, so the map captures the town just before its major expansion. Look closely at the harbor and street grid to see how the settlement was laid out around the water.
