A plan of San Francisco as it was laid out in 1847, when the town was still small and its streets existed largely on paper. Surveyor Jasper O'Farrell drew the town's street grid that year, and its numbered and lettered streets, cut diagonally by Market Street, shaped the city's growth for decades. The record credits the Bosqui engraving and printing firm, so this sheet is a later reproduction of that early survey. Worth noticing is how the grid runs over the hills without regard to their slopes, a choice later generations spent considerable effort working around.
