San Francisco in 1849 was a small waterfront town on the edge of a rapidly expanding bay, and a map of it from that year captures the place just as the Gold Rush began to transform it. The town had been renamed from Yerba Buena only in 1847, and in 1849 its population swelled as prospectors and merchants arrived by sea and overland. Maps from this period show the street grid pressing against the steep hills and the shoreline, where new wharves and buildings were pushing into the bay. The record describes this as a reduced version, so the fine detail of the original is smaller here, but the layout still shows how quickly the city was taking shape.
