Buffalo sat at the eastern end of Lake Erie, where the Niagara River flows out toward Niagara Falls, and by 1880 it was one of the busiest Great Lakes ports in the country. This bird's-eye panoramic view, drawn by E. H. Hutchinson and printed by the Maerz lithographic firm, shows the city as a viewer would see it from high above, with its streets, waterfront, and rail lines laid out in perspective. Bird's-eye views like this were popular in the 1870s and 1880s, when cities commissioned them to advertise their growth. Buffalo's grain elevators and shipping docks, which made it a major center of trade, are worth looking for along the water.
