Skaneateles sits at the northern tip of its long, narrow lake in the Finger Lakes region of central New York, and this 1884 bird's-eye view shows the village from a high oblique angle that makes the lake and surrounding hills read almost like a stage set. The map was drawn and printed by Beck & Pauli, a lithography firm associated with many town views of the period, with L. R. Burleigh credited as well. Maps like this were popular in the 1870s and 1880s, when towns commissioned them to show streets, churches, mills and the homes of local subscribers, so they now serve as a detailed record of how the village looked in the mid-1880s.
