This 1879 bird's-eye panorama shows Albany, New York, the state capital, laid out along the Hudson River from an imagined vantage point high above the city. Such views, popular in the late 19th century, let viewers read individual streets, church spires and riverfront warehouses in a single sweep. Albany's position at the head of navigation on the Hudson, and its role as the eastern terminus of the Erie Canal, made its waterfront central to the city's commerce. The lithograph was produced by Beck & Pauli with H.H. Rowley & Co., firms that issued many city views of this kind during the period.
