A bird's-eye panorama of Edinboro, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1898, gives a rare vantage on a small borough in Erie County that most maps of the period only show from the ground. The view was made by John J. O'Brien, one of the artists who produced the American town panoramas of the late nineteenth century, a genre built on sketching settlements from an imagined height so that streets, rooftops, churches and businesses could all be read at once. Such views were often commissioned or sold to local residents, which is why they still serve as detailed records of how a town was laid out at the century's close.
