Few places in Pennsylvania were shaped as completely by one industry as Girardville, a borough in Schuylkill County built around anthracite mining. This 1889 bird's-eye view shows the town as an artist imagined it from above, with its streets, houses, and industrial works laid out in a single sweeping perspective. T. M. Fowler, one of the most prolific makers of these panoramic town views, worked with J. B. Moyer on the drawing. Such maps were often commissioned to advertise a community's growth to residents, investors, and visitors, so the details of buildings and streets offer a window into how the town wanted to be seen in the late 1880s.
