Newtown, the Bucks County borough in southeastern Pennsylvania, is shown here from an angled, high vantage point, the way town boosters and residents often wanted to see their community. The view was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler, a mapmaker who specialized in these detailed panoramic town portraits in the late 1800s. Newtown had been laid out in the late 1600s and was an older county seat before Doylestown took that role, so the streets, houses, and public buildings in the drawing reflect a settled community near the close of the century. Such maps are useful for seeing how individual lots, churches, and commercial blocks were arranged.
