North East, a borough in the grape-growing country along Lake Erie, appears here from a high, angled vantage that makes the whole town legible at once. Thaddeus M. Fowler, who drew many such town panoramas in the late 1800s, worked in a style that let viewers pick out individual streets, churches, and businesses. Views like this were often sold to residents as a source of civic pride, so the map shows how a town wanted to be seen at the close of the nineteenth century. Look closely at the rail lines and the lakeshore to see how the community connected to the wider region.
