Titusville sits on Oil Creek in northwestern Pennsylvania, and this 1896 bird's-eye view shows a town whose fortunes were tied to petroleum. In 1859, Edwin Drake drilled nearby what is usually called the first commercial oil well in the United States, and the discovery set off a boom that transformed the valley. By the 1890s, the town's streets, rail lines, and industrial sites were still shaped by that rush. Panoramic maps like this one, drawn from an elevated viewpoint, were popular with local boosters and residents who wanted to see their community laid out in full detail.
