Erie's place on the shore of Lake Erie is the first thing this 1870 bird's-eye view puts before the viewer, and the drawing makes clear how much of the town's life depended on the water. Presque Isle Bay, sheltered by its long sandy peninsula, gave Erie a harbor that made it Pennsylvania's main lake port, and the streets rise from the waterfront in the picture. Albert Ruger drew the panorama from an imagined high vantage point, a method that let residents and town boosters recognize individual buildings at a glance. Printed by the Chicago Lithographing Company, it captures a growing Great Lakes town at a moment when its harbor and rail connections were central to its prosperity.
