Shown from a high oblique angle, Latrobe, a Westmoreland County town in western Pennsylvania, is laid out so its streets, rail lines and building blocks can be read together. James B. Moyer and T. M. Fowler drew this 1900 view, part of a long run of bird's-eye town maps that civic boosters and businesses commissioned to show a community as it looked and to advertise its growth. By 1900 Latrobe was a railroad and industrial town, and the map captures that development in its street grid and rail connections. These views were often drawn from observation rather than from a complete survey, so their detail reflects the artists' sketching as much as measured mapping.
