A bird's-eye panorama of Chester, Pennsylvania, drawn in 1885, shows a river town on the Delaware as it looked to an observer hovering above its streets. The view was produced by O. H. Bailey & Co., a firm that specialized in lithographed panoramic city maps during the late nineteenth century, when such views were a popular way to present growing American towns to residents and investors. Chester, which had long served as a shipping and manufacturing center along the river, was in the middle of that industrial growth, and the perspective makes its streets, rail lines and waterfront easy to trace.
