Binghamton sits where the Chenango and Susquehanna rivers meet in the Southern Tier of New York, and this 1901 bird's-eye panorama shows the city as it looked at the turn of the twentieth century, drawn from an elevated oblique viewpoint rather than surveyed from above. Its creators, the Landis & Alsop firm, specialized in these detailed city views, which were built up by hand and sold to local businesses and civic boosters who wanted a recognizable picture of their town. Maps like this one record street layouts, factories, churches, and rail lines in fine detail, making them valuable both as art and as a record of an industrial city then at its height of growth.
