Elmira, in the Chemung River valley of south-central New York, is shown here from an angled, bird's-eye vantage that lets viewers see its streets, rooftops, and rail lines at once. Maps like this were drawn to sell civic pride as much as to inform, and in 1901 Elmira was a busy manufacturing and railroad town. The mapmakers, Landis & Alsop, worked in the panoramic style that was popular in American towns from the late 1800s into the early 1900s. Its detail on individual buildings and streets makes it useful for studying the town's layout at the turn of the century.
