This bird's-eye view shows Buffalo as it looked in 1902, a year after the Pan-American Exposition closed in the city's Delaware Park area. Panoramic maps like this one were drawn from a high oblique angle so that streets, rail lines and waterfront blocks could be read at a glance. Buffalo's place on Lake Erie, at the western end of the Erie Canal, made its harbor and grain elevators central to its growth, and a map of the period shows how much of the city's commerce depended on that shoreline.
