Cooperstown sits at the northern tip of Otsego Lake, the body of water that feeds the Susquehanna River, and this 1890 map shows the village as a town viewed from above, with its streets, lake, and surrounding hills laid out as if seen from a hilltop. Bird's-eye panoramas like this were popular in the late 1800s, when town boosters and local businesses paid artists to record the growing streets, churches, and homes. The village was founded by William Cooper, father of novelist James Fenimore Cooper, whose books made the town a familiar name in American literature. Looking closely at the buildings and roads shows how a small rural community looked at the height of its nineteenth-century growth.
