Drawn from a high vantage point over the whole city, this panorama shows Chicago as a dense grid of streets running down to the shore of Lake Michigan. Bird's-eye views like this were popular in the late 19th century, when Chicago was growing faster than almost any other American city. They let viewers take in the rail yards, the branches of the Chicago River, and the crowded commercial blocks at a glance. Before aerial photography, these hand-drawn views were the closest most people could come to seeing an entire city at once, and they now preserve detail about streets and buildings that has changed greatly since.
