This bird's-eye view sets San Diego against its harbor, with the bay and the peninsula running out beyond the town. Drawn in 1876 by the panoramic artist E. S. Glover and published by A. L. Bancroft & Company, it captures a city that was still small and growing. By then the center of activity had moved from the old Spanish presidio area toward the new downtown laid out by Alonzo Horton, closer to the waterfront. Views like this one were meant to show a town's streets, blocks and buildings in a single sweeping image, so they make a useful record of how the city was arranged in the mid-1870s.
