Portland's compact peninsula, pushing into Casco Bay, is the focus of this bird's-eye view from 1876, drawn from an elevated angle so that streets, wharves and rooftops read almost like a model. Charles Shober & Co. published the map in the centennial year, with lithography handled by the Chicago Lithographing Company and the drawing credited to J. J. Stoner. Panoramic views like this were popular in the 1870s, sold to civic boosters and residents who wanted a portrait of their town. Portland had lost much of its downtown in the Great Fire of 1866, so the view shows a city in the middle of rebuilding.
