Louisville sits on a bend of the Ohio River, and this 1876 panorama shows the city from an elevated oblique angle, so the river, the street grid, and the rooftops appear together in one view. The map was drawn by Albert Ruger and printed by Chicago Lithographing Co. for Charles Shober & Co., a firm that issued many city panoramas in the 1870s and 1880s. Such maps were sold to local residents and businesses, who liked seeing their own neighborhoods rendered in fine detail. Its date places it in the Centennial year, when American cities were eager to present their growth and industry to the public.
