Santa Rosa, the seat of Sonoma County in California's North Bay, appears here as a bird's-eye view drawn at an angle from above. That style let an 1870s town show its streets, houses and public buildings all at once. The map was issued in 1876 by A.L. Bancroft & Company, a San Francisco firm that published many such town views, and its credits also name William M. Evans and E.S. Glover. Views like this were sold to residents and promoters as a record of local growth, so the labeled buildings and street layout are worth studying for what the town looked like in the mid-1870s.
