Few California towns have a longer history than San Jose, which Spanish settlers founded in 1777 as the first civilian pueblo in Alta California. This 1901 bird's-eye panorama shows the city from an imagined high vantage point, with its streets, rail lines and individual buildings drawn in fine detail. Commercial firms such as Britton & Rey of San Francisco produced maps like this by sketching towns from above and then printing the results, which made them popular with local boosters and residents. Today the map offers a close look at a growing Santa Clara Valley city at the turn of the twentieth century.
