San Jose appears here as a bird's-eye panorama from 1875, issued by A. L. Bancroft & Company and credited to the artists Charles B. Gifford and W. C. Gifford. The town had served as California's first state capital in 1850 and 1851, and by the mid-1870s it was the seat of Santa Clara County and a busy center for the surrounding valley's farms and orchards. Panoramic maps of this kind showed streets, buildings, and open land from an imagined high viewpoint, so they offer a detailed picture of how the town was laid out and what it looked like at the time.
