This 1869 bird's-eye view shows San Jose from an elevated angle, so the street grid, rooftops, and surrounding fields appear together in one sweep. San Jose had been California's first state capital in 1850 and 1851, and by the late 1860s it was a growing agricultural and commercial center in the Santa Clara Valley. Panoramic views like this one, drawn by artists such as Louis Nagel and W. Vallance Gray, were popular with town boosters and residents who wanted to see their community as a whole. The map is useful today for studying how the town was laid out and built during its early years as a city.
