This 1876 bird's-eye view shows Salem, Oregon, from an angle that lets the viewer take in the whole town at once, with its streets, buildings, and the Willamette River laid out below. Salem had been the seat of government since 1855, when the territorial legislature chose it as the capital, so the map captures a young town that was growing into its role as the center of state affairs. Panoramic views like this one were a popular way for Victorian-era publishers to document American cities, and A.L. Bancroft & Company's work from this period, drawn with surveys by F.A. Smith and E.S. Glover, offers a detailed record of how the town looked a generation after its founding.
