Few city views from this period show two separate towns side by side, but this 1891 panorama does, with Winston and Salem drawn as neighbors in Forsyth County. The towns would not merge into Winston-Salem until 1913, so the map captures them as distinct communities. Salem was founded by Moravians in 1766 and kept its distinct religious and craft traditions, while Winston grew quickly into a tobacco manufacturing center in the decades after the Civil War. The bird's-eye perspective, typical of panoramic maps by Ruger & Stoner, lets viewers trace streets, rail lines and individual buildings across the landscape.
