This bird's-eye panorama shows Houston as it looked in 1891, drawn from an elevated angle so that streets, rail lines, and buildings spread across the sheet at once. By that time the city, founded by the Allen brothers in 1836 along Buffalo Bayou, had become a major rail and commercial center for the Texas interior, and the rail yards and warehouses that fed its growth are worth looking for. Maps like this were usually commissioned to promote a town to investors and new residents, so the detail often reflects civic pride as much as strict survey accuracy. Compare the waterfront and downtown blocks with the outlying areas to see how quickly the city was filling in.
