This 1891 bird's-eye panorama shows Los Angeles from a high oblique angle, so a viewer can take in the whole town at once, with its streets spreading across the valley floor toward the surrounding hills. The view was published by H. B. Elliott and the Elliott Publishing Company, a firm that produced many large panoramic views of American cities in the late 1800s. It appeared shortly after the Southern California land boom of the late 1880s, when new railroad connections brought rapid growth and heavy real estate promotion to the region. Views like this were sold as civic portraits, so the buildings and street patterns are worth examining closely.
