Bird's-eye panoramas like this one were a popular promotional tool in the 1890s. This 1894 view of Los Angeles was produced for the Semi-Tropic Homestead Company, a land-promotion firm, and the drawing is credited to B. W. Pierce. The city was in the middle of a rapid boom, driven by fierce railroad competition in the mid-1880s and by the sale of orange groves and house lots to newcomers from the East and Midwest. Seen from above, the town and its street grid read as a sales pitch as much as a survey, so it is worth noting how the view presents the city's growth and its prospects to prospective buyers.
