Drawn in 1871, this view captures Los Angeles at a moment when its downtown was still a small grid of adobe and frame buildings clustered around the old plaza. Panoramic maps like this one showed a town from a high, imagined vantage point so viewers could take in streets, lots, and landmarks at once, which made them popular as civic souvenirs and promotional pieces in the late nineteenth century. At the time Los Angeles held only a few thousand residents, but railroad connections were on the horizon and would soon transform its growth. The sheet is worth studying as much for what it emphasizes and how it presents the city's ambitions as for its literal accuracy.
