Frankfort, the state capital of Kentucky, sits in a narrow valley along the Kentucky River, and this 1871 bird's-eye panorama shows the town from an elevated viewpoint that makes that setting easy to read. The view was drawn by A. Ruger and printed by the Cincinnati firm Ehrgott & Krebs, lithographers who produced many such city views in the decades after the Civil War. Maps like this were commissioned by civic boosters and sold to residents, who used them to see their town as a growing, orderly place. The Kentucky State Capitol, completed in the late 1820s, is among the buildings worth looking for.
