This bird's-eye view shows Knoxville, Tennessee, as it looked in 1871, seen from an imagined vantage point high above the town and the Tennessee River. Albert Ruger drew it for a commercial lithographing firm, and the printed panorama was designed to be read like a picture of the town itself rather than a surveyor's plan. By 1871 Knoxville was recovering from the Civil War, when its mixed loyalties and occupation had disrupted local life, and rail connections were helping it grow as a regional trade center. Viewers can use the drawing to trace the street grid, riverfront, and major buildings of a post-war East Tennessee city.
