Lexington's 1871 bird's-eye view presents the Bluegrass city as a horse-breeding and hemp-processing center, a reputation that also earned it the nickname "Athens of the West" for its schools and colleges. The panorama was drawn in the perspective style that the lithographers Ehrgott & Krebs and the artist A. Ruger popularized after the Civil War, when towns commissioned views from a high vantage point showing every street, church and factory. Look closely at the rooflines and the surrounding farmland to see how a town of this period sat at the edge of its agricultural countryside.
