Few American cities were shaped as sharply by rail and war as Chattanooga, and this 1871 panoramic map shows it from a bird's-eye view drawn by Albert Ruger. The town had been a prize in the Civil War, with fierce fighting around Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge in late 1863, and by the early 1870s it was rebuilding around its bend in the Tennessee River and its rail lines. Ruger's elevated perspective lays out the streets, waterfront and surrounding hills as the town stood in that recovery, making it a useful record of a place still reckoning with its wartime past.
