Chattanooga's bend in the Tennessee River, framed by Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge, gives this bird's-eye view its distinctive setting. Drawn in 1886 by the Milwaukee firm Norris, Wellge & Co., the panorama shows a city that had grown quickly since the Civil War battles fought in and around it in 1863, when its rail junction made it a prize for both armies. By the mid-1880s, railroads and iron works were pushing the town toward a regional industrial role, and the map captures streets, rail lines and buildings at that moment of expansion. Panoramic maps like this were valued both as promotional pictures and as practical records of a town.
