Springfield, a town in Windsor County in south-central Vermont, is shown here as a bird's-eye panorama drawn in 1886. The view was made by L. R. Burleigh, who produced many such town portraits in the 1880s, and printed by the Milwaukee lithographers Beck & Pauli. By then Springfield was becoming known for its machine-tool manufacturing, so the map offers a useful snapshot of a New England industrial town at a time when its factories were growing. Viewers can trace the streets, buildings and rail lines as the mapmaker drew them from an elevated angle.
