This 1886 bird's-eye view shows Peterborough, a mill town in southern New Hampshire, drawn from an elevated angle so that streets, houses, and industrial buildings appear in one sweeping scene. The map was produced by L. R. Burleigh's firm, which made many panoramic views of New England towns in the late nineteenth century for local boosters and residents who wanted a detailed picture of their community. Such views were drawn to show the textile and manufacturing sites along the rivers, the churches and schools, and the rural land beyond the village. Mount Monadnock, one of the most visited peaks in the region, rises to the southwest of the town and anchors the landscape.
