Bellows Falls, Vermont, appears here in a bird's-eye panoramic map from 1886, drawn by the Burleigh lithography firm, whose founder, Lucien R. Burleigh, made a specialty of these detailed town views. The Connecticut River drops through rapids at this point, and the village grew up around the falls as a center for mills, canal traffic, and rail connections in the late nineteenth century. Panoramic maps like this one were commissioned for local promotion as much as for navigation, so the streets, rail lines, and industrial buildings are drawn with a good deal of civic pride. Look closely at the river and the falls, which give the town its name and its reason for existing.
