This view covers two neighboring Rhode Island mill towns, Pawtucket and Central Falls, which sit along the Blackstone River and the drop in its channel that powered their early industry. Panoramic maps like this one were drawn from an elevated angle so that streets, factories and houses could be shown together in a single sweeping view, and they were a popular way to record American towns in the 1870s. The firms named on the record belonged to a busy trade in such lithographs. Pawtucket is also where Samuel Slater opened his cotton-spinning mill in 1793, an event often cited as the start of the factory system in the region.
