This 1895 bird's-eye view shows Providence from an imagined vantage point high above the city, with the harbor at the head of Narragansett Bay and the rivers that once made the settlement a port. J. R. Chapin's panoramic views were popular in the late 1800s because they let viewers take in streets, rooftops, and waterfront at a glance, much as if they had climbed a tall hill. By 1895 Providence was a major manufacturing center, known especially for jewelry and metalwork, and the map records a city whose factories, church spires, and College Hill campus of Brown University were shaping its growth.
