Newport, Rhode Island, is the subject of this 1878 bird's-eye view, one of the panoramic city maps issued by the Chicago lithographers Galt & Hoy. Maps of this kind drew the town as if seen from a high vantage point, so streets, wharves, churches and principal buildings appear in recognizable form rather than as flat plans. Newport in the late 1800s was a busy port and, increasingly, a summer resort for wealthy families, a dual character that makes the view useful for seeing how the harbor and the town's older core fit together.
